Inanunsyo ng National Planetarium nitong Lunes ng hapon, October 11 sa facebook page ng National Museum of the Philippines ang pagsasara ng kanilang gusali matapos nitong magbigay ng inspirasyon sa mga kabataan sa loob ng halos 50 taon.
Ayon sa kanilang facebook post, isa sa dahilan kung bakit ito magsasara ay upang magbigay daan sa ginagawang proyekto ng National Parks Development Committee (NPDC) na madevelop ang central at western section ng Rizal Park.
"There are times in the life of a beloved institution where a long chapter has to be brought to a close in order to start a new one, for a new contemporary world and a new set of generations of Filipinos,"
"Thus it is, with a measure of sadness, fondness, and nostalgia – but also with anticipation and excitement for its future, that we announce the temporary closure of the National Planetarium as an institution and the decommissioning of its 46-year-old premises in the central section of Rizal Park, Manila."
Gayunpaman, sinabi ng pamunuan ng National Planetarium na pansamantala lamang silang magsasara bilang institusyon at walang dapat ipagalala ang mga tao dahil bubuo ulit sila ng isang bago at natatanging pasilidad na muling magbibigay buhay sa National Planetarium kung saan maghahatid ito ng world-class na karanasan.
Ang National Planetarium ay pinasinayaan noong 1975 at sumailalim sa ilang pagkukumpuni noong 2017 at 2019.
